Description
How is OKR CYCLES Race chain different from a regular waxed chain?
We prepare Race chains in a way that ensures maximum performance and the lowest possible friction. This makes them ideal for key-event applications, where every second matters. Our regular wax chains already offer high performance, but Race chains receive some extra attention and treatments in order to make them as fast as possible.
Normally, the first step of the waxing process is stripping the factory grease. However, a brand new chain inherently has higher friction due to manufacturing marks on the sliding surfaces. To eliminate them, we first do a machine break-in of the chains, which polishes the sliding surfaces, while the factory lubricant is still on.
On each treated chain, we then use a three stage heated ultrasonic process. This takes around 3 hours and strips the chain to the bare metal surface, making it ready to accept the wax coating.
The base wax we use for Race chains is still the trusty MSW formula, however we tune it up with a blend of high performance additives from Silca. This increases the efficiency to up to 98%, but also slightly reduces the lifespan of a single application by around 10-15%. When the wax cools off, we apply a layer of friction reducing Molten Speedwax Race powder as a final touch.
Please note: All race chains at the moment are made to order. Please allow 7-10 business days for preparation and shipping.

Can I continue using the chain after my event?
After your event, you can send the chain back for re-coating to get it back to the same level of performance. Alternatively, you can re-coat it at home and continue using it as a training chain.
A single application of Race wax lasts around 300-400km in dry conditions. Race chains are also suitable for use in wet/dirty/off-road conditions, although the length of the event will need to be considered given the reduced treatment lifespan.
